Our Vision

The mission of the garden is:

·       to promote, create and maintain sustainable food security on Madeline Island

·       to provide an environment for community building and personal growth

·       to educate residents and visitors about horticulture, local gardening, composting, and preserving foods

The garden project was organized in the Autumn of 2009, and space rented on the Sowl farm on Middle Road, now owned by Gip Matthews and Lauren Schuppe. Work groups were formed and land cleared on the farm. 2 other sites were also included in the garden project. At St. John’s Church there are raised beds, apple and plum trees, grapevines, and perennial plants.. A goal of the garden is to grow some produce for donations to the Food Pantry at St. John’s Church, which are made throughout the summer.

The garden relies on active volunteers to help with a multitude of tasks throughout the growing season, such as weeding, planting, harvesting, and composting. This work has been fueled by financial support from many sources, particularly the Apostle Islands Area Community Fund, The Grutzner Family Foundation, St. John’s UCC, and many other individual donations of all sizes. If you would like to join us in our efforts, please consider getting involved by becoming a member, donating to our movement, or simply visiting the garden. All are welcome here.
